ASHGABAT — 2006 · Suspicious Death
The Death in Custody of Ogulsapar Muradova
Ogulsapar Muradova, a correspondent for the Turkmen service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and a human rights activist, was detained in June 2006 along with several activists. On 25 August 2006, after a brief trial, she was sentenced to prison for illegally possessing ammunition. On 14 September 2006 her family was called to a morgue in Ashgabat to identify her body. Officials said she had died of natural causes, but her children said they saw marks on her neck and a large wound on her head. The family demanded an independent autopsy. Her death drew strong reactions from international press groups and governments, and its circumstances were never independently established.
