LAGOS — 2006 · Major Tragedy
The Abule Egba Pipeline Explosion
On the night of 26 December 2006 thieves punctured an elevated petroleum pipeline in the Abule Egba district of Lagos. Hundreds of people came to collect the leaking fuel in plastic containers. Around dawn, pools of spilled fuel ignited, causing a huge explosion. The death toll was never firmly established; officials and the Red Cross gave figures ranging from 260 to 500. About 60 people were hospitalised with serious burns, and homes, a mosque and a church were damaged. It was one of Nigeria's worst disasters linked to pipeline vandalism and fuel scavenging.
