LAGOS — 2020 · Major Tragedy
The Lekki Toll Gate Shooting (#EndSARS)
During nationwide #EndSARS protests against police brutality and the SARS police unit, peaceful demonstrators gathered at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos were fired on during the evening of 20 October 2020. Protesters were waving flags and singing the national anthem, and cameras and lights at the site were reportedly switched off. The government initially denied any deaths; the army later admitted deploying soldiers but denied opening fire. In November 2021 a Lagos State judicial panel confirmed at least nine deaths and described the event as a 'massacre'. The government rejected the report and no one has been prosecuted.
