HEJCE — 2006 · Major Tragedy
The Hejce Military Plane Crash
On the evening of 19 January 2006 a Slovak Air Force Antonov An-24 carrying Slovak peacekeepers home from the KFOR mission in Kosovo struck the snow-covered, forested Borsó Hill near the Hungarian village of Hejce, a few kilometres from the Slovak border. Forty-two of the 43 people on board were killed; only one officer survived. The aircraft had vanished from radar while preparing to land at Košice. It remains the deadliest air crash in Slovak history; the country's leaders bade farewell to the soldiers at a ceremony in Prešov.
