The Katowice Trade Hall Roof Collapse

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 28 January 2006, during a national racing-pigeon exhibition at a hall of the Katowice International Fair, the central section of the snow-laden roof collapsed. More than 120 exhibitors from across Europe were taking part. Sixty-five people were killed and over 170 injured. Investigators found numerous design and construction errors, including poorly braced roof trusses, with past coal mining also affecting the ground. Twelve people were charged with negligence, and Poland tightened rules on snow-load inspections of large roofs.
