The Studénka Train Disaster

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the morning of 8 August 2008 the EuroCity "Comenius" train from Kraków to Prague, travelling at about 135 km/h, struck part of a motorway bridge under repair that had fallen onto the track near Studénka station. Sections of the bridge had dropped onto the line when the train was only a few hundred metres away. The train derailed, killing eight people and injuring dozens. Police investigators described an "incomprehensible catalogue of negligence and failures" by the construction firm and its subcontractors. Liability proceedings dragged on for years, and it remains one of the worst accidents in Czech rail history.
