The Porvenir Massacre

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the morning of 11 September 2008, near El Porvenir in Bolivia's northern Pando department, a column of Indigenous farmers marching against the departmental government was ambushed. It came amid severe political tension in opposition-held departments after President Evo Morales won a recall referendum. At least 12 protesters were killed. An investigation by UNASUR described the events as a crime against humanity. Pando's prefect, Leopoldo Fernández, was arrested on 16 September 2008 and in March 2017 was sentenced to 15 years in prison for homicide as an indirect perpetrator; several co-defendants also received sentences. Fernández was released in 2019.
