The Zhabei Police Station Attack

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the morning of 1 July 2008, 28-year-old Yang Jia from Beijing attacked the police headquarters in Shanghai's Zhabei district, stabbing six police officers to death and wounding three officers and a security guard. In October 2007, while touring Shanghai on a rented bicycle, he had been detained on suspicion of riding a stolen bike; claiming he was mistreated at the station, he filed repeated complaints without result. Criticism that the trial was held behind closed doors and that he was denied an adequate defence made the case a symbol of China's rule-of-law debate. He was sentenced to death; his appeal was rejected and he was executed on 26 November 2008.
