Spanair Flight 5022 Crash

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

At 14:24 on 20 August 2008, Spanair Flight 5022, an MD-82 leaving Madrid-Barajas Airport for Gran Canaria, lost height immediately after take-off, crashed into ground beside the runway and caught fire. Of the 172 people aboard, 154 died and 18 survived. The accident report found that the crew had failed to deploy the slats and flaps before take-off, and that this incorrect configuration caused the aircraft to stall as soon as it left the ground. The take-off warning system that should have alerted them did not activate. Criminal proceedings against maintenance staff were dropped in 2012. Spanair, struggling financially, ceased operations in January 2012.
