Kütahya Pamukkale Express Derailment

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

At around 02:00 on 27 January 2008, the Pamukkale Express running from Haydarpaşa to Denizli derailed near the village of Çöğürler in Kütahya. Five cars of the train, which carried about 436 passengers, overturned; 9 people died and more than 30 were injured. The cause was found to be a broken rail in an area where night temperatures had fallen to minus 12 degrees. Expert examination found the driver not at fault, noted that the rails had been in service for a long time, and stressed that maintenance and inspection practices needed scrutiny. Coming after the 2004 Pamukova accident, the crash reignited debate on railway safety and calls to speed up rail renewal on the old lines of the state railway TCDD. The resulting court case continued for a long period.
