The Fudan University Dormitory Poisoning

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

At the end of March 2013, a graduate student at Fudan University's medical school in Shanghai put a toxic chemical taken from a laboratory into the dormitory water dispenser used by his roommate. The roommate, Huang Yang, was severely poisoned and died in hospital on 16 April 2013. The offender was detained soon afterwards and claimed he had done it as a "prank"; the court treated it as intentional murder. The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court sentenced him to death in 2014, and he was executed on 11 December 2015. The case started a wide debate in China about relationships in university dormitories and the death penalty.
