The Murder of Poon Hiu-wing and the Extradition Crisis
Poon Hiu-wing, a 20-year-old from Hong Kong, was killed in a hotel room in February 2018 while on holiday in Taipei with her boyfriend. The boyfriend returned to Hong Kong alone; her body was found in March 2018 near a metro station outside central Taipei. The suspect described the killing to Hong Kong police, but because the crime took place in Taiwan and there was no extradition agreement between the two, he could not be tried for murder in Hong Kong. He was jailed only for money laundering and released in October 2019. The case became the justification for the Hong Kong government's controversial extradition bill and triggered the 2019 protests. The murder case in Taiwan remains unresolved.
