The Formosa Fun Coast Fire — The Party Where Coloured Powder Ignited
On the evening of 27 June 2015, at the "Color Play Asia" event held at the Formosa Fun Coast water park in New Taipei's Bali District, coloured corn-starch powder sprayed from the stage over the crowd ignited at around 20:32. Flames spread rapidly through the dust cloud, and hundreds of participants, most aged 18 to 22, suffered burns. 497 people were injured and 15 died. The disaster led Taiwan to introduce rules restricting the use of flammable powders at crowded events. The event's organiser was tried and convicted of negligence causing death, and after appeals a five-year prison sentence was upheld. Compensation proceedings with victims lasted for years.
