Murder of Naji Jerf
Syrian documentary maker and journalist Naji Jerf was shot dead by a masked gunman using a silenced weapon in central Gaziantep at around 15:20 on 27 December 2015. Jerf had made work documenting ISIS practices in Aleppo and Raqqa, was known for his links to the "Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently" network and published the magazine Hentah. ISIS claimed responsibility. The killing came two months after two Syrian journalists were murdered in Şanlıurfa. After a trial held behind closed doors, the Gaziantep 2nd High Criminal Court on 9 June 2017 sentenced an ISIS member to two terms of aggravated life imprisonment plus 5 years and 5 months; three defendants were acquitted. Reporters Without Borders and CPJ recorded the verdict.
