GAZIANTEP — 1979 · Murder
Yakacık grocer murder, Gaziantep (1979)
On 22 May 1979, a grocer in Gaziantep's Yakacık neighbourhood, known for his left-wing views, was shot dead in his shop. The killing was one of the examples in the southeast of the left-right clashes before the 1980 coup. The perpetrator, an ultranationalist militant, was caught in a hotel in Kilis on 11 February 1980. A martial-law military court sentenced him to death on 8 July 1981; the Military Court of Cassation upheld the verdict on 5 May 1982. He was executed on 30 January 1983.
