Lawyer Ceyhun Can Assassinated in His Office

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 10 September 1979 Ceyhun Can, former Adana provincial chair of the Workers' Party of Turkey and one of the intervening lawyers in the Maraş events trial, was shot dead in his law office in Adana. Together with the killing of a university administrator in the city the same week, the attack became a symbol of the political violence in Çukurova before the 1980 coup. The Adana Bar Association commemorates him each year among the lawyers killed in that era. Accessible public sources give no clear, consistent information on the perpetrators or any trial outcome; the case is now regarded as a closed historical record.
