The Assassination of Prof. Fikret Ünsal
At around 08:00 on 11 September 1979 Prof. Dr. Fikret Ünsal, acting rector of Çukurova University and head of neurology at its medical faculty, was shot dead outside his home in Adana. The Turkish Medical Association and the Adana Chamber of Physicians condemned the killing and called for the perpetrators to be caught. The attack came a day after a lawyer was killed in the same city and became a symbol of violence against universities before the 1980 coup. No clear information on a final court judgment against the perpetrators could be found in public sources.
