1979 THY 'Trabzon' Plane Crash

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 23 December 1979 a Turkish Airlines Fokker F-28 named "Trabzon", flying from Samsun to Ankara, crashed at Türbe Tepe near Kuyumcuköy in Çubuk district while approaching Esenboğa Airport, about 32 km north-north-east of the airport. Most of the passengers and crew on board were killed; sources give the death toll as between 39 and 41. A small number of passengers survived. It was one of the heaviest losses in Turkish civil aviation of the period. It is still remembered among the losses suffered on winter approaches to Esenboğa. Because details of the crash are limited in the sources, the discrepancy in the death toll persists.
