The Murder of Sinan Ateş

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Sinan Ateş, an academic and former national head of the nationalist Ülkü Ocakları (Idealist Hearths), was shot in the Çukurambar area of Ankara's Çankaya district on 30 December 2022. A relative with him was wounded in the shoulder, and Ateş died in hospital. The daylight killing of a former leader of the nationalist movement in the capital sparked allegations of a political assassination; many people were detained and arrested. At the end of the trial, the first-instance court handed aggravated life sentences to several defendants tried as the gunman, the motorcycle driver, a scout and instigators. In 2025 the appeals court upheld most of the sentences. His family argued that the political background of the murder was never fully uncovered.
