Mezitli Police Guesthouse Attack

At around 23:45 on 26 September 2022, a police guesthouse in the Mezitli district of Mersin was attacked with long-barrelled weapons. In the attack, carried out by two women, police officer Sedat Gezer was killed, and another officer and several civilians were injured. During the ensuing clash with police, the attackers died after detonating explosives they were carrying. The Interior Ministry said the attack had been carried out by the PKK. Security was tightened in the area afterwards, and operations were launched against people believed to be linked to the attack. A ceremony was held in Mersin for Officer Gezer. The Mezitli guesthouse served as a social facility for police officers and their families; after the attack, surrounding roads were closed and extensive security measures were put in place. The attack drew wide attention for showing that police social facilities could also be targeted.
