Murder of Dr. Ekrem Karakaya
Cardiologist Dr. Ekrem Karakaya was shot dead at Konya City Hospital on 6 July 2022. The attacker was a security guard at the state hospital in Yunak district who reportedly blamed the doctor for his mother's death. After shooting the doctor he took his own life, so no trial followed. The killing reignited the debate on violence against health workers. Medical chambers and health unions held a nationwide strike on 7-8 July 2022, with protests outside hospitals in many provinces. Professional bodies called for legal and institutional measures to prevent violence against health workers. His death was met with deep grief by colleagues and patients.
