Zümrüt Apartment Collapse
On 2 February 2004, the 11-storey Zümrüt apartment building in Konya's Selçuklu district collapsed without any earthquake, owing to construction faults. Ninety-two people died and 30 were injured. At the Konya 3rd High Criminal Court, the contractor, a subcontractor official, the project manager and three municipal officials received prison sentences of between 2 and 5 years. With time already served deducted, most defendants were released; families considered the sentences too lenient.
