On 20 January 2022, on the Tarkwa-Bogoso-Ayamfuri road in Ghana's Western Region, a truck carrying mining explosives collided with a motorcycle. The crash happened at about 1:25 pm; roughly 45 minutes later, before emergency services arrived, the truck's load of around ten tonnes detonated. The blast almost completely levelled the village of Apiate near Bogoso. Police first reported 17 dead, then revised the toll to 13; about 200 people were injured and hundreds were left homeless. The disaster raised questions about transporting mining explosives through populated areas, and a national appeal was launched to rebuild the village.
