ACCRA — 2001 · Major Tragedy
Accra Stadium Disaster
On 9 May 2001, in the closing minutes of a match between Ghana's two biggest clubs, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, at the Accra Sports Stadium, fans of the losing side began throwing seats and bottles onto the pitch. Police fired tear gas and plastic bullets into the stands, triggering panic; locked gates and inadequate exits trapped the crowd. A total of 126 people died, Africa's deadliest stadium disaster. A government commission of inquiry blamed the police for 'reckless behaviour and indiscriminate firing'. Six police officers were tried for manslaughter, but the court ruled the prosecution had failed to prove its case.
