The Assassination of Justice Minister Bola Ige

UnsolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Bola Ige, Nigeria's Attorney General and Minister of Justice and a veteran lawyer and politician, was shot dead by gunmen at his home in Ibadan on 23 December 2001. The killing came amid bitter political infighting within the ruling party in Osun State. Many people were arrested and tried in connection with the murder, but all were acquitted. More than two decades on, the killers have not been identified. Family and friends, including Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, have repeatedly called for the case to be reopened. It remains one of Nigeria's best-known unsolved political murders.
