NEW YORK — 2001 · Major Tragedy
The September 11 Attacks
On the morning of 11 September 2001, 19 men linked to al-Qaeda hijacked four passenger aircraft. Two were flown into the Twin Towers of New York's World Trade Center, both of which collapsed within hours; a third struck the Pentagon in Virginia. On the fourth, United Flight 93, passengers fought back and the plane crashed into an empty field in Pennsylvania. The attacks killed 2,977 people from 90 nations: 2,753 in New York, 184 at the Pentagon and 40 aboard Flight 93. It remains the largest loss of life from a foreign attack on US soil and reshaped security and foreign policy for years to come.
