The Death of Jeffrey Epstein in Custody
Billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein, arrested in July 2019 on charges of sex trafficking of minors, was found dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, a federal jail in Manhattan, on the morning of 10 August 2019 while awaiting trial. The New York City medical examiner ruled the death a suicide. It emerged, however, that guards had not carried out required checks that night, some cameras were not working and his cellmate had been removed. Two guards were charged with falsifying records. In 2023 the Justice Department's Inspector General found serious negligence but no evidence of foul play. The death became the subject of some of the most widespread conspiracy theories in the United States.
