ELEKTRĖNAI — 2001 · Serial Murder
The "Roadside Maniac" Case
In 2001 Lithuania was shaken when young women hitchhiking around the Vilnius-Vievis highway went missing and were later found dead near Elektrėnai. The killer picked up women on the road and drove them to isolated places; one victim's escape provided investigators with crucial information. Dubbed the "Roadside Maniac" by the press, he was arrested in June 2001. It emerged that he had already received a 15-year sentence for a murder in the 1980s. In January 2003 the Vilnius Regional Court found him guilty of sexually assaulting four women and murdering three of them, sentenced him to life imprisonment and ordered the confiscation of his property. It is regarded as Lithuania's best-known serial murder case.
