Derik Double Truck Crash

On 20 August 2022, a truck loaded with fertiliser crashed near a fuel station in the Bahçelievler area of Derik district, Mardin. As residents, medical and security teams gathered at the scene, a second fertiliser truck ploughed into the crowd about 33 minutes after the first accident. The two crashes killed 21 people, including one police officer, and injured many others. An expert report found that the first truck had been travelling at 126 km/h and the second at 125 km/h. The two drivers were tried at the Mardin 1st High Criminal Court and were released pending trial. The crash prompted debate about the road gradient and heavy-vehicle inspections on the Derik road. The outcome of the case had not been finalised at the time of writing.
