2023 Şanlıurfa–Adıyaman Floods

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 15 March 2023, five weeks after the 6 February earthquakes, torrential rain in Şanlıurfa and Adıyaman triggered flash floods. Twenty-one people died, 17 in Şanlıurfa and 4 in Adıyaman. In Şanlıurfa, streets and underpasses were submerged and Balıklıgöl, one of the city's landmarks, overflowed. In the Tut district of Adıyaman, tent and container camps housing earthquake survivors were flooded. According to official statements, 3,154 people suffered property damage. Search and rescue teams worked for days to find the missing. The disaster, in a region only just emerging from the earthquakes, renewed debate over urban drainage, construction in stream beds and the siting of temporary shelters. Authorities launched damage assessment and relief work after the floods.
