ŞANLIURFA — 2015 · Major Tragedy
Suruç Bombing
On 20 July 2015, a suicide bomber struck the garden of the Amara Cultural Centre in Suruç, Şanlıurfa, during a press statement by members of the Federation of Socialist Youth Associations who had gathered to take toys and reconstruction aid to Kobani. Thirty-three people, most of them young, were killed and around 100 injured. The attack was attributed to ISIS. After a six-year trial at the Şanlıurfa 5th High Criminal Court, the sole detained defendant was sentenced to 34 terms of aggravated life imprisonment. Families criticised the narrow scope of the case.
