The Murder of Hereke Carpet Maker Nurhan Ör
Nurhan Ör, a 56-year-old carpet manufacturer and factory owner and one of the best-known names in Hereke carpet-making, disappeared on 7 November 2023. Hereke has been famous for its silk carpets since Ottoman times, and Ör was one of its well-known producers. The investigation found that he had been attacked and killed in the Sultanbeyli district of Istanbul, and that his body had then been taken to a farmhouse in the Kartepe district of Kocaeli, where an attempt was made to destroy it. Investigators established that financial interests and disputes among the defendants lay behind the killing. Six people, aged between 31 and 58, were tried. On 24 October 2025, the Kocaeli 4th High Criminal Court sentenced all six to aggravated life imprisonment for premeditated murder, and two also received prison terms for possessing unlicensed firearms.
