PYLOS — 2023 · Major Tragedy
The Pylos Migrant Boat Disaster
In the early hours of 14 June 2023 the fishing boat Adriana, carrying an estimated 400 to 750 people from Libya towards Italy, capsized and sank in the Ionian Sea about 80 km off the Greek town of Pylos. Most passengers were from Pakistan, Syria, the Palestinian territories and Egypt. One hundred and four people were rescued and 82 bodies recovered; hundreds remained missing. Investigations by the BBC, The Guardian, The New York Times and others cast serious doubt on the Hellenic Coast Guard's official account. In May 2025, 17 coast guard officers, including the captain of the patrol vessel, were charged; the investigation continues.
