The Elmalı Village Family Murders, Uzunköprü
On 29 March 2022, four members of one family were found shot dead in their home in the village of Elmalı in Edirne's Uzunköprü district. The victims were 76-year-old grandfather Mehmet Güner, 55-year-old Mehmet Güner, 47-year-old Filiz Güner and 26-year-old Anıl Güner. Prosecutors alleged that the killer had aimed to seize gold and money, as it was locally known that the family had invested its savings in gold. The 26-year-old defendant, who was arrested, claimed he had arrived after hearing gunshots. On 7 November 2023, the court sentenced him to four terms of aggravated life imprisonment, while acquitting him of robbery. His wife, charged with concealing evidence and aiding him, was also acquitted.
