Murder of Ayşe Paşalı
Ayşe Paşalı was killed by her ex-husband in Ankara on 7 December 2010. She had previously requested protection, but effective protection was reportedly not provided. The perpetrator was caught, tried at the Ankara 1st High Criminal Court and sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment in 2011. The family applied to the European Court of Human Rights; in 2020 Turkey acknowledged its failure to protect her and paid compensation. The case was a key example in the debates leading to Law No. 6284 on protecting women, which took effect in 2012.
