The Turgutlu Bakery Raid

SolvedSources: BLast updated: 14 October 2026

On the night of 7 September 1979 masked gunmen entered the Çınar bread factory in Turgutlu, Manisa. In a period of escalating political violence, the raid, found to have been planned as retaliation for an earlier coffeehouse attack in the town, killed four bakery workers believed to be leftists; three died at the scene and one in hospital. The attackers were caught and tried. A martial-law court in İzmir handed down death sentences on 17 September 1981, and one was carried out on 5 June 1983. The raid is recorded as one of the gravest episodes of pre-1980 political violence in the Aegean.
