İzmir, April 1980: Two Assassinations in Four Days
On 25 April 1980 contractor Nuri Yapıcı was shot dead in his office in İzmir, and on 29 April 1980 pharmacist and MHP provincial official Turan İbrahim was killed in another armed attack. Leaflets in the name of the Communist Labour Party of Turkey (TKEP) were left at both scenes. Investigators identified and arrested three militants who had acted to announce the group's founding. Death sentences were handed down on 7 May 1981, and one was carried out in Buca, İzmir, on 13 March 1982. The killings are documented examples of the tit-for-tat violence between left and right in İzmir before the 1980 coup.
