The Hanife Çakıcı case

SolvedSources: CLast updated: 14 October 2026

On 12 August 2023, in the Dikili district of İzmir, 33-year-old Hanife Çakıcı, a mother of two, left her home to escape violence and took refuge at the bus terminal. Her husband followed her there, and in the argument that followed she was fatally stabbed. The defendant was taken into custody and arrested within a short time. The local court applied a reduction for unjust provocation and sentenced the defendant to 22 years in prison. The Court of Cassation upheld the ruling, finding that the trial had been conducted properly, that there had been no premeditation, and that the reduction applied was appropriate; the ruling became final in 2025.
