Rıza Bey Apartment Case

In the magnitude 6.6 earthquake off Samos on 30 October 2020, the eight-storey Rıza Bey apartment building in Bayraklı, İzmir, collapsed, killing 36 people and injuring 17. Expert reports found that the concrete did not meet the strength class in the design and that the stirrups violated the disaster regulations of the time. The case at the İzmir 5th High Criminal Court grew to 15 defendants after files on municipal officials were merged. The court ordered a new expert report to establish each defendant's responsibility; the trial continues.
