KAOHSIUNG — 2021 · Major Tragedy
The Kaohsiung Cheng Chung Cheng Building Fire
At around 03:00 on 14 October 2021 a fire broke out on the ground floor of the 13-storey Cheng Chung Cheng Building in Kaohsiung's Yancheng district. Built in the early 1980s and once home to a cinema, restaurants and karaoke lounges, the building had largely fallen into disrepair; its roughly 120 upper-floor flats housed many elderly, disabled or low-income residents. The night-time fire killed 46 people and injured 41; the average age of the dead was 62, and most died from smoke inhalation. Investigators found the fire had been deliberately set in a ground-floor shop; the woman responsible was sentenced to life imprisonment for manslaughter and arson. It was Taiwan's deadliest building fire since 1995.
