Murders of Two Scandinavian Hikers in Imlil

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Louisa Vesterager Jespersen, a 24-year-old Dane, and Maren Ueland, a 28-year-old Norwegian, who were studying outdoor guiding at a university in Norway, were killed while camping in Morocco's High Atlas Mountains in December 2018. Their bodies were found on 17 December in the foothills of Mount Toubkal near the village of Imlil. Morocco's prosecutor described it as a terrorist act after a video emerged showing suspects pledging allegiance to ISIL. A total of 18 people were detained. In July 2019 an anti-terrorism court in Salé sentenced the three men directly responsible to death; the sentences were upheld on appeal in October 2019, and a fourth conspirator was also sentenced to death. Morocco has not carried out an execution since 1993.
