Murder of Chaïma Sadou
Chaïma Sadou, 19, from Réghaïa in Algeria, was found dead at an abandoned petrol station in the town of Thenia, east of the capital, in early October 2020. The perpetrator was known to the authorities: her family had filed a complaint against him in 2016. He confessed after his arrest. The killing caused a wave of outrage on social media, with criticism that the state was failing to tackle sexual violence against women and calls for the reinstatement of the death penalty, which Algeria has not carried out since 1993. He was sentenced to death for rape and premeditated murder, and the Boumerdès Court of Appeal upheld the sentence in November 2024.
