In July 2020, in Portugal, Black actor Bruno Candé was shot dead with a hunting rifle in the middle of the street. It was established that the victim had been subjected to racist insults before the attack. The case intensified debate over racism in Portugal. The court sentenced the 76-year-old defendant to more than 22 years in prison for a racially motivated murder.
