The Gangnam Station Murder
In the early hours of 17 May 2016 a woman in her early twenties was stabbed to death in a shared restroom of a building near Seoul's Gangnam Station. The attacker said he did not know her and had committed the crime because he felt ignored by women; he was found to have waited in the restroom for more than an hour for a woman to enter. The court accepted diminished capacity due to schizophrenia but, citing the gravity and premeditation of the crime, imposed a 30-year prison sentence, which the Supreme Court upheld in April 2017. The killing sparked a spontaneous memorial and protest movement in which thousands of sticky notes were left at the station exit, and it became a turning point in South Korea's debate on violence against women.
