The Murder of an Ex-Husband in Jeju
In May 2019, on Jeju Island, a man who had won court permission to see his son was killed at a rented guesthouse where he had gone to meet his ex-wife and their child. The woman tried to dispose of the body as she travelled from the island to the mainland; most of the remains were never found. Arrested in June 2019, she claimed self-defence, but the courts found the killing was premeditated. The Jeju District Court sentenced her to life imprisonment in February 2020, and the Supreme Court upheld the sentence in November 2020. She was acquitted, for lack of evidence, over the death of her second husband's young son.
