AMMAN — 2005 · Major Tragedy
Amman Hotel Bombings
On the evening of 9 November 2005, suicide attacks struck three hotels popular with foreign diplomats in the Jordanian capital Amman, the Grand Hyatt, the Radisson SAS and the Days Inn, within minutes of each other. The heaviest toll came in the Radisson SAS ballroom during a wedding attended by hundreds of guests; the fathers of the bride and groom were among the dead. The attacks killed 57 people and injured 115. Al-Qaeda in Iraq claimed responsibility. One of the attackers in the ballroom failed to detonate her explosives and fled, and was caught days later; she was tried and sentenced to death, and the sentence was carried out in 2015. The attacks caused outrage in Jordan, and hundreds protested against them in Amman.
