Under InvestigationSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 9 November 2005, the Umut Bookshop in the Şemdinli district of Hakkari was bombed, killing one person. Suspects trying to leave the scene were stopped by a crowd that gathered. In the unrest that followed, another person died when security forces opened fire. On 19 June 2006, the Van 3rd High Criminal Court sentenced two gendarmerie non-commissioned officers and an informant to 39 years and 10 months in prison. The Court of Cassation overturned the ruling and the file was sent to military jurisdiction; the defendants were released in 2007. The trial moved between courts for years, and a new conviction was handed down in 2012. On 20 December 2021, the Van 1st High Criminal Court acquitted all defendants, and the acquittal was upheld in 2023. The case is now at the application stage before the Constitutional Court.
