JAKARTA — 2003 · Major Tragedy
The JW Marriott Jakarta Bombing
Around midday on 5 August 2003 a vehicle packed with explosives blew up in front of the lobby entrance of the JW Marriott hotel in Jakarta's Mega Kuningan business district. The suicide attack on the hotel, seen as a Western symbol and frequented by foreign business people, killed 12 people and injured about 150; most of the dead were Indonesians. Police said the composition of the explosives and the methods used resembled those of the Bali bombings a year earlier. The suicide bomber was identified from remains found at the scene and testimony from jailed members of the group. Investigators linked the attack to the South-East Asian Jemaah Islamiyah network. It came two days before a verdict in the trial of the Bali bombers. The hotel was bombed again in 2009.
