KUTA — 2002 · Major Tragedy
The 2002 Bali Bombings
On the night of 12 October 2002 bombs exploded in quick succession at Paddy's Pub and the Sari Club, two crowded nightspots in the tourist district of Kuta on Bali; a smaller device had gone off near the US consulate in Denpasar shortly before. The attacks killed 202 people from more than 20 countries, including 88 Australians, and injured hundreds. The deadliest terrorist attack in Indonesia's history was carried out by the al-Qaeda-linked group Jemaah Islamiyah. A joint Indonesian-Australian police investigation led to the arrest of many members; three perpetrators were sentenced to death and executed by firing squad in November 2008, and others received long prison terms.
