MALANG — 2022 · Major Tragedy

The Kanjuruhan Stadium Disaster

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the night of 1 October 2022 a deadly crush occurred after a football match between Arema and Persebaya Surabaya at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. After the home side's defeat thousands of fans entered the pitch and clashes broke out with security forces. Riot police firing tear gas, including into the stands, caused panic; spectators trying to flee became trapped at narrow and partly locked exit gates. The disaster killed 135 people and injured hundreds. It was the second-deadliest stadium disaster in football history. In trials in 2023, organising and security officials and police officers received prison sentences; the proceedings were marred by claims of intimidation, including police heckling prosecutors in court.
